Theory Exams - Road Traffic Department

The first phase of the driver’s licence test is the theory exam.  Applicants are tested on their knowledge and ability with regards to the Road Traffic Highway Code, along with their ethics and conduct, as it relates to the rules and regulations of the Road Traffic Act.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be 17 years or older in order to apply to take the theory test.

Process:

  1. Present a National Identification Document (i.e. passport, voter’s card…), NIB Smart Card and Immigration status document (if applicable) to the Road Traffic Department, Driver’s License Unit, Thomas A. Robinson Stadium.
  2. The Client Service Representative will register the applicant in the Road Traffic Department Transport Management System.
  3. A BS$15 seat fee must be paid before the applicant sits the exam.
  4. There is limited seating and persons are accommodated on a first come first serve basis.
  5. Exams are scheduled to commence at 9am.
  6. The exams consist of 40 questions. There is a 40 minute duration. Participants must correctly answer a minimum of 32 questions (80%) to successfully pass the exam.
  7. Test result are issued immediately after the test is taken.
  8. If the applicant fails the Theory Examination, the examination can be retaken the following day during any of the times listed above. However, if successful, the applicant becomes eligible to receive their Learner’s Permit within 2 working days of the examination.
  9. Only on the applicant’s second attempt, the examination fee is lifted.

There are no Examination Forms, this is a completely automated process.

Supporting Documents:

  • Passport
  • Smart National Insurance Card
  • Non-Bahamians should present Passport, Permission to Reside (via Work Permit issued by The Bahamas Immigration Department), Residency, Spousal Permit or Permanent Resident

Turn-around time:

Once all the required documents are captured, seats are available and all outstanding fees are settled, the test can be done on the same day you visit the Driver’s License Unit of the Road Traffic Department.

Test result are issued immediately after the test was taken.

If the applicant fails the Theory Examination, the examination can be retaken the following day during any of the times listed above. However, if successful, the applicant becomes eligible to receive their Learner’s Permit within 2 days of the examination

Related Fee:

The fee of BS$15.00 covers the cost of the theory examination and the practical examination If you fail the theory examination, you will be allowed to re-take for the second time at no cost.
