Learner’s Permit Renewals - Road Traffic Department

An individual learning to drive a  motor vehicle in the Bahamas must possess a learner’s permit.  Permit holders should ensure that permits are valid before test driving any vehicle.  Learner’s permits are valid for six months and are renewed once the permit has become expired or near expiration.

Further, permit  holders when driving any motor vehicle, must carry the prescribed “L” plates at the front and back of the vehicle and should always be accompanied by a person having a valid driver’s licence for not less than two years.

Eligibility:

Applicants must have an existing  learner’s permit.

Process:

  1. Complete renewal form (form requires your learner’s permit number.)
  2. Present completed form, expired learner’s permit and payment to the cashier.
  3. Cashier will issue a receipt of payment to applicant.
  4. Upon verification of the relevant information, the Photo Clerk will update and print the learner’s permit.  If necessary the photograph and signature of the applicant would also be updated.
  5. Renewed learner’s permit would then be issued.

Please Note:  Applicant must notify the cashier immediately of any changes to their learner’s permit (i.e. name changes, physical changes, amendments) and must provide all supporting documents (i.e. passport, marriage certificate, divorce document etc.) when changing any information on licence.

  • Expired Learner’s Permit
  • Passport (if necessary)
  • National Insurance Card (if necessary)
  • Non-Bahamians should present their Passport, Permit to Reside, issued by The Bahamas Immigration Department (Work Permit, Residency Permit, Spousal Permit or Permanent Resident Permit), or any other proof of residency.

Turn-around time:

Once all the requirements are met, the renewed permit can be issued on the same day of your visit.

Deadline:

A learner’s permit must be renewed on or before the expiration date stated on the learner’s permit.

Related Fees:

BS$15.00 every six months
