Road Traffic Department Endorsement Types
An endorsement will provide that driver with a special permission to operate a certain type of commercial vehicle and to transport special types of goods. The endorsements below will be added to a student’s certificate once completed. Further, the endorsement can then be added to the front, back or both sides of the new Commercial Driver’s License. The types of endorsements an individual can apply for are listed below:
Class A CDL Combination Vehicle:
Any combination of vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of more than 26,000 lbs., where the towing vehicle is in excess of 10,000 lbs.
- Knowledge Tests
- General Knowledge Test
- Air Brakes Test (if applicable, most Class A vehicles are equipped with Air Brakes but not all)
- Applicable exams for desired endorsements
- Skills Tests
- Pre-trip Vehicle Inspection
- Basic Vehicle Control
- On-road Test
- Class A vehicle to complete skills testing and on road test
Class B CDL Straight Vehicle
- A Class B commercial driver’s licence, to drive
- a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more; or
- A single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more used to tow another vehicle and the vehicle being towed has a gross vehicle rate weighting of 10,000 pounds or less;
- Knowledge Tests
- General Knowledge Test
- Air Brakes Test (if applicable)
- Applicable exams for desired endorsements
- Skills Tests
- Pre-trip Vehicle Inspection
- Basic Vehicle Control
- On-road Test
- Class B vehicle to complete skills testing and on road test
Class C CDL Small Vehicle
- A Class C commercial driver’s licence, to drive;
- a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds but less than 26,001 pounds;
- A single vehicle of any gross vehicle weight rating used to pull multiple trailers;
- A single vehicle used to pull a single trailer, where the vehicles have a combination gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds but less than 26,001 pounds;
- a passenger vehicle that carries more than ten passengers including the driver; pursuant to subsection (3)of the road traffic act
