Public Service Driver’s Exam - Road Traffic Department

The Public Service Driver’s exam process allows successful applicants to obtain a Public Service Driver’s Licence.  This process includes a series of interviews which assesses their knowledge of the industry, along with their character, ethics and conduct.

Eligibility:

1. Bahamian Citizen
2. Possess a Drivers Licence for more than 3 years
3. BahamaHost Certified
4. Must be 21 years or older

Process:

  • Complete application form
  • Submit the completed form along with the relevant supporting documents to the Public Service Licencing Unit of the Road Traffic Department.
  • Upon review and approval of the application and supporting documents, an interview appointment would be set by the Clerk and the applicant would be contacted with the appointment time and date.
  • After successful completion of the first interview, the applicant will be notified and an appointment would be set once again for the next available date and time.
  • Applicant must return to the Examination Unit on the appointment date and time stated on the appointment card for the practical exam.
  • Upon document verification and inspection of the vehicle provided for the test, the Examiner will conduct the practical exam.
  • On completion of the practical test, applicants will immediately be informed of the results.

Please Note:  Practical exam appointments are Monday to Friday, 9am – 3pm (except during lunch lpm – 2pm). Further, on days when there is inclement weather the Chief Examiner would make a determination whether conditions are safe to conduct the driving test; else test would be postponed without cost to the applicant, however, applicant must be present.

Additional Details:

On the day of the test applicant must present:

  • A valid learner’s permit
  • A Valid Passport
  • A National Insurance Card
  • A receipt of payment for the examination
  • An appointment card
  • A vehicle to be used for the examination (please note that the vehicle will be inspected for road worthiness before the examination can begin.)
  • A sign with the letter “L” in red on a white background must be placed on the front windshield and the rear back glass
  • A licenced driver must accompany the applicant to the office on the day of the test and must present a valid driver’s licence for a period not less than one year to the inspector.

Please Note:  Non-Bahamians should present Passport; permit to reside in The Bahamas issued by The Bahamas Immigration Department, via Work Permit, residency Spouse Certificate or Residency to reside.

 Turn-around time:

  • Interviews and practical test appointments are given on a first come basis, therefore, applicants would receive the next available appointment.
  • If an applicant fails the practical test there is a waiting period of 30 days before they can resume the process.
  • Please Note: In some instances further processing of some applicants may be necessary.
