New Licences - Road Traffic Department

After successful completion of a theory and practical driving test a driver’s licence is issued.  This licence gives persons the ability to drive legally on the streets of The Bahamas.

Driver’s licences expire at the end of the holder’s birth month and are issued for either one or three years.  However, persons obtaining a driver’s licence for the first time can only have their new licence for a period of one year.

First time drivers applying for a driver’s licence should have successfully completed the theoretical and practical driving test examinations.

The following steps are required to obtain a driver’s licence:

  1. Present supporting documents to the Road Traffic Department, Driver’s Licence Unit.
  2. Upon verification of all information, the Photo Clerk will take the photograph and signature of the applicant. (In cases where the applicant possessed a  learner’s permit, the photo and signature in the system can be used on the new driver’s licence.)
  3. Upon payment to the cashier, the driver’s licence Clerk will issue the new driver’s licence.
